DeAnda Photography Headshot Prep Guide

What to Wear:

  • Choose solid colors or subtle patterns – Jewel tones, earth tones, and classic neutrals (black, navy, gray, or white) are universally flattering and create a timeless look. Avoid neon or overly bright colors, as they can cast unwanted tones onto your skin.

  • Fitted clothing photographs best – Avoid oversized or loose-fitting clothing that can make you look less polished.

  • Layering adds dimension – Blazers, jackets, and structured sweaters not only add depth but also provide an easy way to switch up your look in minutes.

  • Avoid large logos, text, or busy prints – These can be distracting and take attention away from your face. Stick to simple, professional styles that focus on you.

  • Bring multiple outfit options Even if you have a favorite look in mind, having a few backup options allows for variety. If you're unsure, I can help you decide what works best on camera.

  • Necklines matter – Higher necklines (crewneck, collared shirts, or blouses) photograph better than low-cut tops, which can disappear in a tight crop.

  • Undergarments – Make sure to wear the right undergarments for your chosen outfit. Light or sheer fabrics may require nude-toned options to avoid visibility. If you're wearing a structured top or blazer, a well-fitting bra or undershirt can help maintain a polished look. Avoid anything with thick straps or visible lines that might show in your final images.

Hair & Makeup Tips:

  • Keep makeup clean and natural – matte foundation helps reduce shine.

  • Hair should be neat and styled – if you’re due for a cut, schedule it a few days before your session.

  • Groom facial hair in advance – If you shave, do so the morning of your session to avoid irritation. If you keep facial hair, trim and shape it for a clean, intentional look.

  • Hair and Makeup Services available with Looks by EMA and Mane Boutique Hair Lounge. I can get you in touch with them. They are just a few doors down from the studio.

Glasses & Accessories:

  • Wear glasses daily? – If so, bring a pair with an anti-glare coating. Lenses without this coating can reflect light and obscure your eyes. Avoid transition lenses, which may darken under studio lights.

  • Minimal jewelry is best – Small studs, a delicate necklace, or a simple watch can add personality without being distracting. Statement pieces can overpower your headshot.

The Day of Your Session:

  • Bring your clothing options with you – You can change at the studio to avoid wrinkles on the drive over.

  • Avoid alcohol the night before – Alcohol can cause puffiness or dehydration, affecting your skin and energy levels.

  • Stay hydrated & well-rested – Drinking plenty of water and getting a good night’s sleep will help you look fresh and alert.

What to Expect During Your Session

  • Pose & Expression Tips Not sure how to pose? Don’t worry, I will guide you every step of the way. A relaxed, natural expression works best. Think of a slight smile or a confident gaze. If you're unsure, practice in the mirror or take some test selfies to see what feels natural.

  • Reviewing your imagesWe will review your images together to ensure you love them before wrapping up. If you need adjustments, whether it’s your posture, hair, or clothing, I will guide you to make sure we capture your best look

  • Retouching and Final ImagesAll final images include light, natural retouching to enhance but not alter your look. Blemishes, stray hairs, and minor distractions can be corrected. If you have specific preferences, just let me know. You can see a sample of a reotuch on this page.
